How I pick the best Kotak credit card (my method)

I never look at a card's marketing. I look at where real money goes every month. For most Indian households, that is groceries, food delivery, OTT, fuel, and UPI. A card that rewards those categories well beats a fancy travel card that you use twice a year.

Next, I check the fee-to-reward ratio. A Rs 10,000 fee card can be great if you spend enough to extract more than that in value. But for most people, a Rs 750 fee card that gives 5% cashback on daily spends is a better deal.

One card cannot do everything. That is why this list has a clear best card for each profile. Use my ranking as a shortcut, but choose based on your top three spending categories. If you are unsure, take the 2-minute quiz and I will match you.

Best overall: Kotak Cashback+ Credit Card

If you spend on groceries, food delivery, OTT, and fuel, this is the card I recommend first. It gives 5% cashback on online food delivery, groceries, and entertainment, and 3% on fuel. The annual fee is Rs 750, but you recover that quickly.

Let me break down a realistic example. Suppose you spend Rs 8,000 a month on groceries and food delivery (5% = Rs 400) and Rs 3,000 on fuel (3% = Rs 90). That is Rs 490 cashback in one month. Over a year, that is Rs 5,880. The fee looks tiny.

There is a cap though – 750 reward points per cycle, which works out to Rs 750 cashback per statement cycle. That is fine for most households. The card also gives 0.5% cashback on all other spends, so it is not useless outside the bonus categories. You can read more on the Kotak Cashback+ Credit Card page.

Who should skip this card? If you spend heavily on travel or premium shopping, there are better options below. Also, if you do not spend much on the bonus categories, the 0.5% base rate is weak.

Best lifetime free: Kotak League Platinum Credit Card

This is my pick for someone who wants a no-stress card. The annual fee is Rs 499, but it is often waived with spends of Rs 50,000 in a year. And the RuPay variant works on UPI, which is a huge advantage.

You earn up to 8 reward points per Rs 150 on travel agencies, airlines, electronics, and department stores. On UPI spends via the RuPay variant, you earn reward points too. That makes it a practical everyday card. Plus, there is a milestone benefit: spend Rs 1.25 lakh in 6 months and get 4 free PVR tickets or 10,000 reward points.

The card also gives a Rs 500 welcome movie voucher and a 1% fuel surcharge waiver between Rs 500 and Rs 4,000. For a fee this low, the package is solid. Check the Kotak League Platinum Credit Card page for details.

The drawback? The reward rate on general spends is not the highest. But if you want a lifetime free card with UPI and movie perks, this is the best Kotak card for you.

Best for travellers: Kotak Air+ Credit Card

If you fly at least a few times a year, this card earns its fee. It gives 5 Air Miles per Rs 100 on flights and hotels booked via Kotak Unbox, and 2 Air Miles per Rs 100 on all other spends. Each Air Mile is worth Rs 1, so that is a 5% return on travel spends.

You also get 4 domestic and 2 international airport lounge visits per year. That alone can be worth Rs 5,000+ if you use lounges. The forex markup is just 2%, which is lower than most cards in this range. That saves real money on international trips.

The annual fee is Rs 3,000, but you get 2,500 Air Miles as a welcome bonus, which softens the blow. You can see the full details on the Kotak Air+ Credit Card page.

Compare this with the IndiGo Kotak card below. The Air+ is better for non-IndiGo flights and gives international lounge access. The IndiGo card is better if you are loyal to IndiGo and want BluChips.

Best for IndiGo flyers: IndiGo Kotak Credit Card

If IndiGo is your airline, this card makes sense. You earn up to 19 BluChips per Rs 100 on IndiGo flight bookings. You also get 2,500 BluChips as a welcome voucher and milestone vouchers worth up to 7,500 BluChips in a year.

The annual fee is Rs 1,500. That is lower than many co-branded travel cards. There is no cap on BluChip earnings, which is rare. If you fly IndiGo at least twice a year, the fee is easily recovered through flight discounts.

The drawback is that outside IndiGo, the rewards are thin – 2 BluChips per Rs 100 on dining and entertainment, and 1 BluChip per Rs 100 on everything else. So it is only worth it if you fly IndiGo regularly. See the IndiGo Kotak Credit Card page for all features.

Best for movie buffs: PVR INOX Kotak Credit Card

This is a niche card, but if you watch two or more movies a month at PVR INOX, it is a no-brainer. You get 5% off on movie tickets and 20% off on food and beverages. The joining fee is zero, and the annual fee is Rs 499.

Let us do the math. If a movie ticket costs Rs 300, 5% off is Rs 15. For two tickets a month, that is Rs 30 saved. Over a year, Rs 360. Not huge. But the 20% off on food and beverages is where the money is. A Rs 500 food bill gets a Rs 100 discount. Two movies a month with food easily recovers the fee and more.

There is also a milestone benefit: 1 free movie ticket for every Rs 10,000 spent. That is a nice bonus. The card is not great for other spending – only 0.5% cashback elsewhere. So get it only if you are a genuine movie fan. Details on the PVR INOX Kotak Credit Card page.

Best for fuel savings: IndianOil Kotak Credit Card

If you spend heavily on fuel, this card helps. You get 5% value back on IndianOil fuel spends, and 2% back on groceries and dining. The annual fee is Rs 449, waived on Rs 50,000 annual spend. That is a low bar.

The fuel surcharge waiver is standard – 1% between Rs 500 and Rs 4,000. The 5% value back is in the form of reward points, which you can redeem for fuel or other rewards. That is a decent return for a category where most cards give nothing.

The main limitation is that the high earn rate is only at IndianOil pumps. If you mostly fill up at other pumps, this card is not for you. Also, the forex markup is 3.5%, so avoid using it abroad. See the IndianOil Kotak Credit Card page for specifics.

Best for UPI users: Kotak UPI RuPay Credit Card

This is a lifetime free virtual credit card that links directly to UPI. You earn 3 reward points per Rs 100 on all UPI spends. That is a simple way to get rewards on QR payments without any annual fee.

For someone who uses UPI for everything, this card turns those payments into reward-earning transactions. It is a great starter card for young spenders. There is no physical card – it lives in your UPI app.

Availability may be invite-only for some customers, so you should check on the Kotak website if you can apply. For more on UPI credit cards, read my guide to the best UPI credit cards in India.

Best for lifestyle shoppers: Kotak Zen Signature Credit Card

This card is for people who spend on apparel, lifestyle, departmental stores, and jewellery. It earns up to 10 Zen Points per Rs 150 in those categories. The annual fee is Rs 1,500, but you also get up to 11 complimentary lounge visits per year, which adds travel value.

The catch is category exclusions: education, utility, and government spends do not earn points. There is also a cap of 6,500 points per billing cycle. That is fine for most shoppers, but big-ticket purchases may hit the cap.

If your shopping is spread across many categories, the Cashback+ card may be simpler. But if you are a regular at lifestyle stores, this is a solid pick. Since I do not have a dedicated page for this card yet, check Kotak's official site for the latest fee and feature details.

Which Kotak card should you pick? A quick decision guide

Here is how I would choose, based on your top spending categories:

  • Groceries, food delivery, OTT, fuel – Go with Kotak Cashback+ Credit Card. The 5% cashback beats everything else for these essentials.
